Performing Arts Technical Assistant

$32.56 – $34.23 per hour plus super

John Paul College is seeking a passionate and skilled Performing Arts Technical Assistant to join our vibrant School of Performing Arts.

This role is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic individual who thrives in a fast-paced, creative environment and enjoys working with technical production, AV equipment, and live event coordination.

This casual position offers flexible hours, providing hands-on experience in event production, music, and audio-visual technology while contributing to the success of our performances and educational programs.

Job Description

About the Role:

As a Performing Arts Technical Assistant, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of performances, events, and classroom activities by providing technical support, maintaining equipment, and assisting students and staff with AV production tools. Reporting to the Performing Arts Operations Manager, you will be involved in:

  • Setting up, operating, and troubleshooting AV, lighting, and sound equipment for performances and rehearsals.
  • Training students and staff in music production, video editing, and MacOS-based software such as Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Supporting event logistics, including the setup and transportation of technical equipment.
  • Providing on-site technical support during live events and productions.
  • Assisting in maintaining the cleanliness, organisation, and functionality of equipment and workspaces.
  • Ensuring efficient cable management, rigging, and positioning of lighting and stage setups.
  • Supporting technical pre-production tasks and maintaining detailed records of equipment usage and inventory.


This role offers a dynamic work environment where you will collaborate with students, staff, and performers to create high-quality productions that enhance the artistic and educational experience at John Paul College.

Desired Skills and Experience

About You:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Experience in technical production, AV setup, or event production (preferred).
  • Proficiency in MacOS-based software, including Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Knowledge of sound production and video editing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, with attention to detail.
  • Physical ability to lift and transport technical equipment safely.
  • A passion for performing arts and event production.
  • A current Paid Blue Card (or the ability to obtain one).


Working Conditions

  • Casual role with flexible hours based on event schedules and production needs.
  • Work may include evenings, weekends, and school holidays.
  • Requires standing for extended periods and working in various indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Availability for short-notice work may be required.
