On The Road With The Wombats

Having worked with The Wombats since 2017, lighting designer Dave Jackson pretty much has free rein on the design and this time, for their current Australian tour to promote the new album, Fix Yourself, Not The World, he wanted to do something completely different.

“I decided to just use spots and lighting the guys from directly above so we only had six wash lights in the rig for a bit of side wash.”

Creative Productions supplied the East Coast whilst Show Screen supplied a reduced Perth Rig.

1 x MA3 full size Stadium Shows
1 x MA3 compact ( European and US tour Dates )

18 x ShowPRO LED Blinders
6 x Robe Spiiders
36 x GLP X4 Bar 20
36 x Robe Spikies
24 x LED Strobe Bars

Dave decided to use the MA3 Software for the tour asking Clint Dulieu to be his programmer.

“It worked out pretty well with him teaching me the platform and also assisting with the programming,” he added. “However, it did start pretty slow as we had planned to start programming during the Xmas holidays and the day before we were to start, Clint got COVID so we were programming from two different locations. I would program a couple of songs and then send the show file to him over and overnight he would clean up the file …. this went on for a week before we could both get into the same space.”

Dave wanted a unique set piece that could be travelled around the world and also checked into domestic flights. He decided upon 18 x GLP KNV Dots and 56 x Martin Fatron Strips with pixel diffusers on them.

“This was to replicate the 80’s 8-bit look that the band had gone with on the album cover,” he explained. “The band had also fixated on the Rubik Cube look so I had decided to arrange the strips in a 3 x 3 configuration on pipes and bases plus also mask the riser with a custom Rubik Cube fascia. All the set fixtures, power supplies and cable fitted into six Pelican cases which weighed under 32kg each.”

Dave ran Resolume and DMX to the Fatron as well as IMAG for the arena shows.

Dave’s favourite moment is during the song Pink Lemonade with the streamers going and the Spikies pointing straight into the crown with their prism rotating, he admits he still loves those lights.
