Research out of Lausanne, Switzerland points to an unexpected benefit to onstage LED lighting; not only does LED save you power and reduce heat emissions apparently it can now save your follicles.
According to Dr. Karl Blickensderfer of the Swiss HSI clinic for the hair-challenged(which has close links with Australia’s Advanced Hair Studio) and specialises in Alopecia senilis, the increase in use of LED stage lighting has been traced to a reduction in baldness onset in musicians.
“We have treated many famous musicians at our clinic but recently we noticed a drop in enquiries,” says Dr Blickensderfer in his recently published paper. “Upon further investigation our scientists began to see a correlation between hair loss and LED lighting. The LED targets the DHT in the scalp resulting in miniaturisation of the follicle. This effect is particularly noticeable in the green part of the spectrum (495 – 570 nm). We are currently involved in extensive research as to why this so. Unfortunately it is too late for performers such as Billy Joel.”
