Neumann Debuts V 402 Preamp

Neumann has introduced its new V 402 microphone preamplifier with integrated headphone monitoring. While the company created preamp modules for its consoles in decades past, the unit marks Neumann’s first stand-alone microphone preamp.

Designed with an aim of not imparting a sonic stamp on a microphone’s original signal, the V 402’s transformerless circuitry reportedly ensures that it amplifies the microphone signal without unwanted colouration or sonic artifacts, such as noise and distortion.

The V 402 is equipped with a studio-grade headphone amplifier to provide monitoring. Independent volume controls for each channel allow users to dial in a latency-free monitoring mix without affecting the recorded signal. A pair of instrument inputs are onboard with very high impedance, and a switchable high pass removes rumble and pops without signal degradation. A 20 dB pad allows the V 402 to be used with high-level sources up to 28 dBu without distortion. The mic preamp comes in a 2U 19” rack enclosure measuring 89 mm x 483 mm x 242 mm.
