National Touring – Lighting Supervisor

Opera Australia (OA) is Australia’s national opera company dedicated to enriching Australia’s cultural life with exceptional opera and musical productions. OA has a range of major projects supporting the future of opera as a contemporary offering, extending the reach of its art-form to new and emerging audiences and of connecting appropriately with specific communities around the nation.

About the role
Joining OA’s Technical division and supporting the Head of Lighting, this role will manage the smooth operation of the Lighting team through the installation, rehearsal, and performance periods for all productions across the Company.    

The Lighting Supervisor will be required to undertake significant travel beyond Sydney and the successful applicant must be available to work between 19 June – 4 September 2023.  

Key areas of focus

  • Assisting in the setting-up lighting equipment for performances, both individually and as part of a team 
  • Supporting leadership in the operational needs of the lighting department while interpreting the directions and ideas from the Lighting Designer and the Production Manager 
  • Developing work schedules for the local crew 
  • Collaborating with the touring crew and staff from each regional venue
  • Participating in venue documentation and join staff meetings to hear feedback, implement improvements, share ongoing changes or updates

Key Selection Criteria

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a Lighting Supervisory role or similar
  • Proven experience leading, managing, and understanding lighting requirements in a theatre or festival context
  • Proven experience in adapting productions and re-lighting across venues
  • Clear leadership skill; confident working within the wider team and independent work
  • Have an understanding of WHS practices
