My Gig: Stephen Dean’s A Night at the Theatre

The design process for working with the STARC company revolves around attending rehearsals and discussions with the director, Tony Knight. From all of the information from the Director and my reading of the script and then watching rehearsals, I develop lighting design ideas. This I then plot with Vectorworks. Then bump in day arrives, I rig the lighting, starting on stage before the set and props people get in the way of my ladder. Then it is plotting, rehearsals and then the all-important preview night to make sure it all works with an audience present. A bit of fine-tuning will often happen at this stage and then we are into opening night and a short run of eight nights. Not bad considering that we bump in on a Monday morning and are previewing on a Wednesday night.
