When Michael Zagarn was looking for the ideal companion fixture for his Martin MAC Vipers, he had a thorough look at what was available.
“As I do so much theatre work, shuttering was a number one priority but I also needed something that is versatile,” he commented. “I looked at a few makes and models but the most versatile was the Claypaky Scenius Unico. It was the clear winner. With its’ full framing shutter, I’ll be able to create great effects such as full sunrises.”
Having discovered the ideal product, Michael purchased eight Scenius Unicos and the first time he used them, he was blown away by their features. The Scenius Unico is a magnificent spot light for projecting effects, with six rotating gobos, a rotating prism, a beautiful animation wheel, and it is equipped with the most sophisticated and most precise framing system on the market today.
The Scenius Unico is also an excellent wash light, since it features a system with different diffusion filters, which may be inserted gradually. However the most amazing feature is that the Scenius Unico can also generate a powerful narrow beam of super concentrated light, with a minimum beam angle of only 5 degrees.
“I was very impressed by the high CRI and the animation wheel,” he said. “The zoom range is incredible, you can go from a very tight beam to a full wash very quickly. The evenness of the colour is impressive too. Basically the Scenius Unico is a fully featured fixture that does everything, and does everything really well – unlike some of its competitors.”
As soon as Michael unpacked his Scenius Unicos, they went straight into the rig for Nova Music Theatre Company’s production of Les Miserables. The Scenius Unico were staggered throughout the rig providing front, side and back light.
“I was able to use them for keylight as I could frame them down to pick up precise areas that we wanted,” added Michael. “Being a very tight show with a revolve in the stage, the ability to light just certain sections of the stage meant that the set crew were able to have scenes ready to go resulting in minimal blackout time. It made the show flow very well, even though it’s a three hour show it was quicker than it could have been.”
The rest of the lighting rig featured sixteen ShowPro LED FC Profiles, two of which had custom yokes so they could act as followspots.
Michael reports that the Scenius Unicos performed flawlessly but if they hadn’t, he knew that the Claypaky brand is well supported by Show Technology and that was another major factor in his product choice. Having a Show Technology branch in Melbourne was very important and comforting to Michael.
