Production Resource Group (Australia) Pty Ltd’s original purchase of fourteen Martin MAC301 was for Hairspray The Musical and eight months they were happily ensconced at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre. At the moment they are ‘between engagements’ waiting to move on to Sydney’s Lyric Theatre for another lengthy run.
The rest of Production Resource Group (Australia) Pty Ltd’s Martin MAC301’s, purchased along the way, have done tours for Paramore, Celtic Woman, Bon Jovi, Usher (pictured), Disturbed and most recently Justin Bieber, as well as guest appearances with Rohan Thornton on the Grand Final Footy Show (AFL) and Carols by Candlelight (Melbourne).
“The MAC301’s have been very reliable,” commented Allan Anderson, Production Resource Group (Australia) Pty Ltd’s Stock Control Manager. “For Bon Jovi, they had originally requested an alternative fixture but we were unable to supply the quantity required. Some of them were changed to the MAC301s, and the LD (Sooner Routhier), was happy to make the substitution, although never having used them before. Since then, she was also the designer for Disturbed, and their design included….MAC301s!”
Rohan Thornton refers to the MAC 301 as the ‘right package’ stating that it’s destined to become an iconic workhorse of the industry, no mean feat given the amount of products around.
“They are lightweight, bright, power efficient but they are also a damn good light,” he said. “Their colours are consistent, they move well and the beam range is excellent.”
Recently in The 2010 AFL Grand Final Footy Show, Rohan specified sixty-six MAC301 to do the job previously done by 480 Par 64 cans.
“The savings on time and power were astonishing,” commented Rohan. “At Carols By Candlelight, we used thirty-two MAC301 to replace the job that eighteen VL3000 washes used to achieve. The MAC 301 is fast becoming the most versatile instrument in a Lighting Designers Inventory.”
Production Resource Group (Australia) Pty Ltd has also recently acquired some Martin MAC250 Entours but there’s not much to report about them. They have all been installed for the Melbourne season (and subsequent tour) of Rock of Ages where they have quietly been working away with no reports of them needing any TLC.
