Martin MAC Quantum Washes and Pro Shop LED PAR Hex-18 shake it up

The final of the Bacardi Legacy Global Cocktail Competition was held this month at Sydney’s Town Hall with 34 finalists from around the world travelling to Australia to compete for the title after each had spent several months perfecting and promoting their own ‘Legacy’ cocktail.

Lighting designer for the event was Ziggy Ziegler who was overjoyed to get his hands on the venue’s latest lighting gear: Martin MAC Quantum Washes and Pro Shop LED PAR Hex-18 fixtures.

The brief was to use the Bacardi colours of black, gold and lots of red; those that know Ziggy, will appreciate his delight at being instructed to use the colour red!

The majority of the lighting used was in-house with Cairielle supplying anything else required including a bunch of Clay Paky Sharpys to place behind the stage to create beams in the air behind the bartenders.

“I think the Town Hall has one of the most comprehensive venue rigs in the entire country,” commented Ziggy. “You really only have to bring in floor packages and a console, if you don’t like theirs. The roof rig is more than adequate for any show, there are so many movers and LED units up there.”

Eight Martin MAC Quantum Washes have recently been installed into the Town Hall and Ziggy was highly impressed by their output.

“I found that with just four MAC Quantum Washes, I could wash the entire venue and yet I could zoom them right down to make them into a little special spot almost onto a bunch of flowers,” he said. “They’re incredibly versatile. Just two of them can light the whole organ. The zoom on them is amazing and they’re extremely bright. I used them at different times to light the stage and the audience. They really are a lovely unit.”

Ziggy also used the venue’s MAC Auras above stage as specials to light the organ player, with a further six in the vestibule lighting a bar, a small band, a chandelier and some Bacardi backdrops.

“Again, they are a really handy unit and I use them a lot these days,” he added. “I often use MAC Auras for fashion catwalks and the photographers don’t notice the difference, thinking I’m using fresnels. They just can’t tell anymore which is great as MAC Auras are much easier to rig and get running!”

Ziggy rigged many of the Pro Shop LED PAR Hex-18 underneath the balconies to uplight their underside and bounce light underneath them. More were used to light the roof resulting in a massive roof wash with a few also on the organ.

“The Hex-18’s are very, very bright which is good as you need it for coverage in that venue,” remarked Ziggy.
