MA3 in a Negative Space

Filling a niche in New Zealand is Negative Space, a newly created, design-only based company that can also supply the front end for their work.

“Basically we do the weird and wonderful design things and bring that special attention to the creative side of your show,” explained Jason Steel, Managing Director of Negative Space. “To give us a leading edge, we have purchased some of the latest technology in the industry from disguise, Follow Me and most importantly, an MA Lighting grandMA3 fullsize.”

Negative Space also works alongside several New Zealand production companies including Oceania, Spotlight, MJF, AC Lighting and Forge Audio.

“We strive to bring a difference to our shows by creating wow moments,” said Jason. “I really enjoy the step up the grandMA3 has brought from a hardware perspective; the touchscreens are a lot more responsive and there are some great features such as the backlit faders, extra screen real estate and the controls feel really nice.”

Negative’s MA3 has seen action with Bryan Adams, Toto, Rhythm and Vines, and is currently working hard on Dancing with the Stars. It also went on the road with Six60, one of New Zealand’s most popular bands who draw tens of thousands of punters to their shows.

Jason is actually the band’s lighting designer/operator, saying the MA3 and disguise were the obvious choice, not just because they had them in house but also because the integration between them works so natively.

“It’s so easy to control and manipulate disguise from the MA3,” added Jason. “I had the ability to create the looks effortlessly from the MA3. The MA3 was also very stable and gave me all the control space I needed to do the show with.”

Photographed is the Six60’s Dunedin gig which AC Lighting supplied 52 x Martin MAC Viper 27 x MAC Aura and 50 x Sharpys. Jason remarked that the MAC Vipers were a solid part of the show as they were able to compete with the LED screens.
