Over the years Magnums Hotel has evolved into one of the top entertainment venues in Queensland with frequent guests from around Australia making the trip to the Whitsundays to experience what Magnums has to offer. Magnums Hotel is located in the middle of the main street of Airlie Beach and is a mecca to backpackers.
LXD Lighting Design recently installed new lighting into the venue’s Party Bar which hosts many acts and events. Top of the list were four Martin RUSH MH4 compact beam moving heads which are ideal for smaller venues. The RUSH MH4 blasts an intense and narrow beam for spectacular mid-air looks and effects. It houses a fixed gobo wheel and colour wheel with a multitude of effects possible from a dimmer and strobe, 6-facet prism and focus.
“The RUSH MH4 are a brilliant beam fixture and are not expensive to buy,” commented Ben Madden of LXD. “The beam look is very popular in this kind of market and the RUSH MH4 is simply a great fixture. They’re fast, they work and they have a Martin badge inside of them so they must be good!”
LXD also installed a couple of Clay Paky Stormy CC LED strobes which have RGBW LEDs so they are able to flash in any colour: there is no more need for gels, which dramatically reduce the amount of light, or slow noisy unreliable scrollers.
“For a full colour spectrum strobe light they’re amazing,” said Ben. “They’re really, really good and very versatile. They’re good for a venue which doesn’t have an in-house LD, rather a DJ running the light show, because you can’t cook them or do any damage with them like with other strobes. Being LED you can hammer the shit out of them and they just take it.”
ShowPro gear installed included four Hex16 LED bars and four Blinder Bars whilst four EX36 LED Floods are situated out the front of the venue to light up a large, old tree.
“The Hex16 LED Bars are again great fixtures,” added Ben. “They have heaps of pixels in them and a great bunch of presets for the DJ’s running them on a night to night basis. When we come in for certain events we put them into 96 channel mode so we can pixel map them. They have a massive light output …. I just love them!
“The uncovered EX36 are placed on the boardwalk under the tree only 100 metres from the ocean and despite running seven nights a week for the past six months, there is no corrosion on them and they have been working perfectly. The light output out of them is HUGE and there are some really good rich colours.”
Kennedy Amplifier Hire supplied the equipment to LXD Design.
