Dave Jackson began his career in the entertainment business by starting as a DJ back in 1985. He soon discovered an interest in lighting and got into the cover band scene in Melbourne during the early 90s. He worked with a number of cover bands doing lights and also worked for a number of production companies.
In 2000 Dave took a position with ULA Group as National Sales Manager building brands like High End and Robe, but after three years he returned to production working with artists like No Doubt, Taxiride, Eskimo Joe, John Butler and Silverchair.
In 2012 Creative Productions was born in the garage of Dave’s house with the intension of keeping it small, but after they did Metallica’s Australian tour, he knew it would never be small.
Today Creative employes over 30 staff in three offices with over 1500 moving lights and over 1000sqm of LED screen.
What would you normally be doing this time of year?
I would be buried with quotes and preparing for Splendour.
What’s a fairly normal day at the moment for you?
I usually start the day with a walk with the dog, then make a number of calls to staff, friends and promoters. I have also been trying to build a new show template file on the console that I have sitting at home.
Are you learning anything to improve your skills set?
I’ve been trying to teach myself Vectorworks again and also been trying to learn the MA3 software.
What bad habits have you slipped into?
Eating way too much food and laying on the couch too much.
How are you coping financially?
I was lucky enough to have some savings and pre-COVID I was making double payments on my mortgage so I’ve been able to survive all right with the JobKeeper program.
When do you think live entertainment with return and in what format?
Personally I think we will see real shows with large numbers by Christmas, but before then we will see club shows with Australian artists.
Do you have any words of encouragement?
Be positive, reach out to friends and family as much as possible especially when you’re feeling down.
What makes you happy at the moment?
My Girlfriend, my dog, and baking.
