LightJockey in control at the Hilton Surfer’s Paradise

Providing the ultimate in comfort and convenience, one of Australia’s most dynamic hot spots now has a wonderfully stylish addition – Hilton Surfers Paradise.

Hilton Surfers Paradise is the first leisure-focused hotel and residence offering by Hilton Hotels & Resorts in Australia. The $700 million Hilton Surfers Paradise is a two-tower development which contains a combination of 169 stylish hotel rooms and 250 spacious residences available in one, two and three bedroom configurations.

Tony Dowthwaite Lighting Design, award winning lighting design consultancy, was commissioned to create a splash of colour to the façade of the hotel with Light Project supplying the equipment and Stowe Australia doing the installation.

A linear LED projector system was decided upon to add colour and interest to an otherwise bland concrete façade, with Martin LightJockey chosen for control. All thirty-two LED fixtures are individually controlled so they can be mapped within the LightJockey software.

What was originally supposed to be a fairly straightforward lighting installation has ended up being much more dynamic using more of the functionality of the Lightjockey than was initially intended.

“The original intent through the designer and with direction from the client was to simply have all the fixtures going through a very slow colour scroll, maybe four colours over a fifteen minute period,” explained Hamish Little, project manager at Light Project. “However as they started to understand what LightJockey was capable of they decided that they would like to try some of the dynamic effects that LightJockey offered. For example having the entire building in blue and then having a white chase from one end of the building, round the corner, down the street and back in the opposite direction.”

Hamish is delighted with the end result describing it as superb and noting that LightJockey has been working like a dream.

“The Show Technology guys were able to program everything for the LightJockey remotely,” he said. “With direction from Ash Dowthwaite of TDLD, we gave them a set of parameters that we wanted them to work within and then it was as easy as turning up on the day, plugging in a USB stick and walking up the street to watch it all work! It was pretty impressive.”

Hamish has been very impressed by LightJockey’s many user-friendly features.

“We have lights positioned on a vertical wall at different heights and obviously when you do that you get different intensities of light,” began Hamish. “To get an even wash of light at different heights you need to dim the ones higher up so that they match the intensity of the ones at lower levels. With RGB you dim the separate RGB colours up and down to create different colours like mixing dyes – what was interesting with LightJockey is that you could set a colour and then dim the intensity of that colour back down within the intensity of the light and still retain the colour. There are not many systems that can do that. It meant we could keep the whole wall completely even with no hot or cold spots and the client was well impressed with that capability through LightJockey.”

One of the most impressive features offered within LightJockey is the scheduling system, which is perfect for architectural lighting installations such as this. The scheduler allows for changes in daylight time based on your geographical location. As the daylight fades earlier in winter and later in summer, LightJockey ‘scheduler’ tracks these changes and delays or advances the starting of the lighting system to coincide with these changes. This means the lights are on when they need to be and are off when they are not required.
