The Kingston Hotel has re-emerged as a modern hospitality destination, combining fresh design with high-performance audio-visual systems to meet the needs of its growing community. Just south of Hobart, the venue has been reimagined by Kalis Hospitality as a versatile hub for dining, sport, entertainment, and private functions. To bring this vision to life, Jands worked alongside Internet Solutions Tasmania to deliver a multi-zone audio platform that blends seamlessly into the venue’s new look while giving staff intuitive, reliable control across every space.
Key Players
Kingston Hotel: A multi-space venue serving dining, functions, sporting events and entertainment for the local community just outside Hobart, Tasmania.
Kalis Hospitality: Tasmanian-owned operator behind the upgrade, focused on adaptable spaces and a consistent guest experience.
Internet Solutions Tasmania: Systems integrator led by Matthew Grey, responsible for end-to-end AV delivery, programming and staff usability.
Jands: Since 1970, Jands has been at the forefront of distributing world-class audio, video, lighting and broadcasting technologies across Australia and New Zealand.
The Challenge
The brief called for a complete AV overhaul across distinct zones — restaurant, bar, the Jacaranda Room function space, gaming, sports bar with TAB and an outdoor deck — each with different acoustic, aesthetic and operational needs. The team needed weather-resilient loudspeakers for Tasmanian conditions outside, consistent coverage and tonal balance inside, and a single, intuitive control layer that staff could learn quickly. Tight timelines and the need to minimise visual impact increased the importance of precise design support and product interoperability.
The Solution
Led by Jands Hospitality BDM, Ilias Sintrikos, the project was delivered through close collaboration with Matthew Grey of Internet Solutions Tasmania and Alexia Kalis of Kalis Hospitality. Each zone of the Kingston Hotel was treated as a standalone project, ensuring tailored acoustic performance and intuitive user control while keeping the overall system cohesive.
“The success of the Kingston Hotel upgrade really came down to aligning technical precision with a clear venue vision,” said Ilias. “It was about lifting the guest experience while making day-to-day operation easier for staff.”
The jands team supported detailed design and engineering across all areas, specifying Electro-Voice EVID C Series in-ceiling and EVID S Series surface-mount speakers, with IP-rated models outdoors to withstand Tasmania’s climate. System-wide processing was provided by Dynacord MXE5 DSP matrix and WPN-1 wall controllers. A custom Sonicue iPad interface gave venue staff simple scene-based presets, while Blustream Dante converters.
For Alexia Kalis, CEO of Kalis Hospitality, the project reflects exactly what her team set out to achieve: “Our goal was to create a welcoming, modern venue where every space feels considered. The new system is discreet, reliable and easy for staff to operate, which means it enhances the guest experience without ever getting in the way of the design.”
From the integrator’s perspective, Matthew Grey, General Manager at Internet Solutions Tasmania, said the key was tailoring the system zone by zone before tying it together on one intuitive platform: “By treating each part of the hotel as its own project, then tying it together on one intuitive platform, we gave staff a system that feels simple on the surface but has the depth to adapt for future needs. With MXE5, Sonicue and Electro-Voice, they can run the venue with confidence.”
