Illumination Physics introduces the Modular Dot

Illumination Physics specialises in high technology lighting products for the architectural market. As both designer and manufacturer, the company is able to provide services across every stage of a major project, from concept to commissioning. The result is a high degree of customisation on a project-by-project basis, leading to improved function and value.

An example of such custom design is illumination Physics’ 6W Modular Dot. This product is a custom-designed modular light fixture based on the IP Dot. The benefit is that you can attach as many modules to the dot as required in order to achieve the desired projection of direct and indirect light – vertical, horizontal or both directions simultaneously. This makes it both a practical and cost-effective product.

The particular application this fixture was designed for required a great deal of flexibility. Firstly, the fixture had to be adaptable enough to accommodate multiple combinations of a frontward facing diffused dot (with RGB colour mixing). Secondly, it had to be flexible enough to be configured to allow for a sideward shooting fixture. This configuration would produce a very narrow comet tail effect (with RGB colour mixing) from any one of the four sides of the central fixture.

Originally, the lighting plans called for numerous variations of the setup, all individually designed to suit a specific configuration. However, as the quantities required were not large the costs were going to be prohibitive for the project.

The company says: “In order to meet the architect’s needs, Illumination Physics came up with the modular idea. This allowed us to make a good quantity of each type of module which consisted of a central dot-style fixture and demountable side modules. This had two positive outcomes: Firstly, the modules could be assembled in various configurations which catered to all the lighting designer’s varying needs. Secondly, the modular fixture could be produced at a reasonable cost. This is just another example of the unique custom solutions we offer to the architectural lighting market.”
