Head Of Technical Operations

Sydney Theatre Company is Australia’s largest theatre company and the state theatre company of NSW. STC is a place where artists, staff and audiences come together to explore and share ideas through the power of live storytelling.

Role Overview:

The Head of Technical Operations is your chance to provide operational leadership to our dynamic Technical Department. Working hand-in-hand with the Director, Technical & Production, you’ll be the driving force behind our day-to-day technical operations, orchestrating seamless coordination between production and venue operations that bring our performances to life.

Contract and Hours of Work:

This is a full-time permanent opportunity that offers the perfect work-life balance! You’ll be working Monday to Friday (38 hours) from our stunning STC Wharf Offices. As part of Sydney Theatre Company’s live performance family, there will be occasional after-hours work – but don’t worry, we’ve got flexible working arrangements and comprehensive policies to manage this fairly with your supervising manager.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A seasoned professional with a minimum of ten years relevant experience, ideally within a producing theatre company
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent industry training that showcases your expertise
  • Exceptional leadership skills with a proven track record of inspiring teams and managing people effectively
  • Outstanding communication abilities – both written and verbal – that can engage diverse stakeholders
  • Superior project management skills with a logical, analytical approach to planning and resource allocation
  • Genuine passion for the performing arts and deep appreciation of theatre, particularly in the Australian context
  • Sharp attention to detail and quality control mindset to ensure every production element meets the highest standards
  • Comprehensive knowledge of theatre practices, terminology, etiquette and craft, including detailed expertise in:
  • Rigging and stage automation
  • Lighting systems
  • Sound engineering
  • Projection technology
  • Theatrical costume
  • Props management
  • Advanced financial management capabilities with demonstrated success in managing substantial budgets and resources
  • Thorough understanding of Work Health and Safety legislation and procedures specific to theatre and entertainment industries, with proven experience implementing these requirements thoughtfully
  • Hands-on experience with touring productions, whether domestic or international
  • Strong technical computer skills, including advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and AutoCAD
  • Knowledge and experience with financial system platforms, preferably TechnologyOne
