Victorian Opera, the state opera company of Victoria is seeking to appoint an inspiring individual as Head of Production. This role will join the Senior Leadership Team at Victorian Opera and become a key stakeholder in delivering excellent live theatre production and events for our growing audiences and supporters. Working across many of Melbourne’s live performance venues and additionally presenting work in regional Victoria and Tasmania, we are seeking an experienced candidate, ready to inspire and lead our team of full time and casual staff.
Working with the Chief Executive Officer, Artistic Director and Head of Finance and Corporate Services, the Head of Production will work to help Victorian Opera achieve our goals of:
- Delivering all technical requirements of production shows and events to the highest possible standard.
- Production shows and events will be delivered on time and within budget.
- Ensure all activity pertaining to production shows and events are compliant with Victorian Opera’s EHS policy and procedures.
- Managing and monitoring risk assessments for each production, event and venues.
- Key liaison contact for all production personnel and venues when in residence.
- Relevant information and documentation will be complete and communicated to all relevant staff and stakeholders.
- Oversee the administration of the Production Department. Inclusive of all full time, casual and seasonal staff required to produce an event or production show.
- When required, produce detailed costings or schedules to assist with the budgeting of future productions.
- Collaborate with Executive Team to ensure adequate planning and utilisation of resources.
- Provide financial reports and updates to the Executive Team or Board throughout the production process and contribute to debriefs on delivered productions, either through written reports or debrief meetings.
- Management of the technical budget for each production and event.

- Demonstrated experience across the live entertainment industry with relevant industry qualifications.
- Proven ability to manage projects and promote teamwork.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional learning and continuous improvement.
- Exceptional time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines with budget and to the highest level of excellence.
- Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to change across a dynamic arts sector.
