Head of Lighting

A unique chance to join our production and workshop team and make an impact on Aotearoa New Zealand’s cultural community. 

The Royal New Zealand Ballet is a company of dynamic dancers from diverse backgrounds and presents a repertoire of classic and contemporary works across Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.? ? 

We’re currently on the search for a permanent full time Head of Lighting, based in our Wellington premises, reporting into the technical Director and Production Manager.  This is a touring role – regionally, nationally and internationally. 

In this management role, you will lead all aspects regarding Lighting and further support Video and Sound to ensure performances and rehearsals run smoothly and are delivered to a consistently high standard in an efficient and safe manner. 

Day to day you’ll be responsible for: 

  • Creating lighting designs for small scale tours and venues as well as special events (marketing, festivals and education) as required by RNZB. 
  • Operating lighting for tours, venues as well as special events. 
  • Identifying and recommending technology that would be useful to the Company and that RNZB maintains its standing as an industry leader in live performance. 
  • Working with Lighting Designers, Technical Director and Production manager to prepare paperwork for Lighting including equipment lists, cable plans lighting plans, truck pack, cue sheets etc. 
  • Rigging, focusing and ploting the lighting at each venue. 
  • Being part of the technical team that packs in and packs out the production at each venue.  
  • Health and Safety / First Aid in the workshop and on the road as required. 
  • PAT testing all electrical equipment as required across the Company. 
  • Maintaining all RNZB Lighting, Video and Sound equipment, keeping RNZB at the forefront of technology and an industry leader. 

Who and what are we looking for? 

  • Previous experience in a similar role. 
  • ETC console knowledge and use preferred. 
  • Vectorworks or similar CAD software use essential. 
  • Good communication skills. 
  • Ability to multi-task effectively. 
  • Work autonomously and within a team. 
  • A clean driver’s licence.
