We are looking for a Head Mechanist to join our Technical team, who are responsible for delivering the staging requirements for Melbourne Theatre Company productions and events, and Southbank Theatre hirers.
The position is often responsible for instructing a small team of Mechanists, participating in the installation or maintenance of the various staging elements required for our Productions and events or facilities and equipment. General tasks include coordinating the transportation and loading and unloading of scenery, bump in and bump out activities, supervised rigging, masking, manual handling tasks, maintenance, storage, and forming part of the “Show Crew”.

- The ability to work under limited supervision, both collaboratively in a team as well as alone
- Planning and organisational skills
- Ability to understand and apply quality control techniques
- Experience and knowledge in the use of basic hand and power tools including the safety requirements of their use
- Basic trade skills in painting and carpentry
- Ability to cope with the demands of a high pressured position where time and resources are limited and artistic expectations are high
- Able to accurately work from, read and interpret technical drawings and plans
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of theatre practices, terminology, and etiquette and theatre craft is essential and a high level understanding of H&S issues, policies, legislation and Australian Standards
