Echoes of Pink Floyd with Chauvet

Designed to recreate the sights and emotions of a genuine Pink Floyd concert, Australia’s largest scale Pink Floyd concept show ‘Echoes of Pink Floyd’ recently celebrated 35 years since the band last toured. The Echoes of Pink Floyd performed tracks from the iconic 1979 album ‘The Wall’ as well as other Pink Floyd songs throughout the years in a concert held at the Griffith Regional Theatre in August.

John Matkovic, Technical Operations Coordinator at Griffith Regional Theatre was chosen as lighting designer for the concert, with the creation and design of the light show as well as operation all completed by John himself. With John having used the CHAUVET Professional range in various shows held at The Griffith Regional Theatre over the years, the Echoes of Pink Floyd was no different. John incorporated the following Rogue and COLORdash fixtures for the lighting rig supplied by Showtools International:

Rogue R1 FX-B Moving Head Systems
Rogue R1 Spots
Rogue R2 Washes
COLORdash Par-Quad 18’s

The Rogue R1 FX-B moving heads were placed around the circular truss on the stage for their infinite rotation of their five individually controlled heads. John explained, “The Rogue R1 FX-B’s were positioned around the circular truss which helped me create a staggered multi-dimensional effect. These added to the depth of the stage lighting with the fixtures infinite pan and tilt rotation with its five individually controlled 15W RGBW moving heads.” The R1 FX-B fixtures played a key role in crafting a large-scale visual feel. “The combination of incredible brightness, saturated colours and 360° rotation gave me a lot of looks to play with, including creating sharp energetic effects to whip up visual energy when required depending on the song,” stated John.

Complementing the looks of the FX-B’s was the colourful output of the Rogue R2 Wash fixtures that were positioned around the stage. Utilizing the wide (12° to 49°) zoom range of the wash units John was able to cover the stage area, to provide a continuous flow of fresh looks. “The zoom and saturated colors of the R2 Wash always stand out for me,” commented John. “With their output, colour quality and wide zoom range, the Rogues are perfect for a wash fixture and provided great colour for the concert. Combined with the fast, smooth pan and tilt movement, the R2 wash is a punchy fixture that delivered especially holding their own amongst the other fixtures.”

Likewise, the Rogue R1 Spots fixtures that John implemented were used for backlight, beam and gobo effects. “With its fast pan and tilt movements, interchangeable gobos, motorized iris, split colours, variable speed scrolling and other performance features, the Rogue R1 Spot provides myself with an array of options,” John stated. “The two gobo wheels, one of which rotates and has 7 interchangeable gobos was vital in helping me make some great custom looks for the bands various performance throughout the night.”

To round off the lighting rig, John implemented 20x COLORdash Par Quad 18’s for a great general colour wash to provide overhead and for side light for the band. “The COLORdash Par-Quad 18 is a powerful and compact quad LED fixture that helped me create a variation of white and stunning saturated colours for an expansive palette devoid of multi-coloured shadows,” John explained.

The Echoes of Pink Floyd concert was held successfully at The Griffith Regional Theatre with lighting designer for the show John Matkovic utilising CHAUVET Professional fixtures which helped in creating different looks and adding colour for the band in front of a sold-out audience.
