Construction Project Manager

About Mandylights
Mandylights is the region’s largest entertainment lighting and production design house. Since 2006, the company has delivered projects in over sixty countries around the world including world concert tours, innovative light artworks, permanent architectural installations and special events including broadcasts, festivals, experiential events and corporate activations. The company has offices in Australia and the United Kingdom and includes over around twenty full time designers, technicians and management staff.

Position Description
Mandylights is seeking an experienced professional who is familiar with the entertainment industry to help deliver on project construction elements while ensuring that creative, client and financial considerations are honoured. The position is a contract engagement with flexible working hours over an engagement period of May to November 2020.

Our company specialises in in-house creative design and technical execution, with a great, tightly-knit team of designers and technicians who are able to draw and build complex lighting and scenic designs. This contracted role will ideally be able to lead the construction side of projects, focusing primarily on the fabrication of scenic and structural elements that will ultimately work together with our creative and technical designs to produce the cohesive, integrated artworks we are known for.

Mandylights expects the role to begin with 3-4 days a week of contact hours in the first few months, then varying as required until November. There are several factors; such as the addition of new projects, etc that may provide scope for additional hours that can be discussed in due course.

Work Structure
This position will contain a mixture of in-office hours (at our Sydney office in Leichhardt) and may contain some international travel. Mandylights is currently operating with many staff members working from home due to the Covid-19 situation, and it is expected that the Project Construction Manager would be able to work from home as required. Arrangements are subject to change as government advice is updated.

The position includes the following requirements:

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Working with our in-house production designers and technicians to refine, develop, cost, prototype and execute light artwork designs using primarily electrical, steel, alloy and lighting components.
Engage with construction and other suppliers to manage quoting, invoicing, scheduling, delivery, inspection and specification phases of engagement.
Manage and balance the design process with engineering requirements and lead discussions accordingly.
Working with our administration teams to accurately develop, manage and account for detailed budgets – made even more important with the understanding of cashflow implications during the current Covid-19 situation.
Develop construction drawings and processes that show an appreciation for the constraints and considerations of temporary public art developments, including load in and out methodology, transport, storage and rigging.
Work with our team, local and international production managers to manage installation methodology, schedules, etc
Engage with freight and logistics suppliers to assist with the procurement of transport and logistics of the artworks.

Required Skills
A minimum of three years real-world experience in production and / or construction management
Advanced knowledge of an industry-standard CAD package (such as Vectorworks or AutoCad. Note that Sketch Up is not included in this list)
Excellent written and oral communication skills to communicate with a broad range of stakeholders
Proficiency with MacOS and standard applications including Pages, Numbers and Microsoft Office
Excellent organisational skills
Outstanding customer service and the ability to communicate effectively and passionately with clients
Experience and / or demonstrated appreciation of processes related to the build, installation and operation of temporary public artworks and their maintenance and operational details
Ability to travel internationally without restriction
Ability to manage construction, production, freight and delivery schedule
Working knowledge and / or appreciate for rigging and some engineering practices

Highly Desirable
Project management skills including client communications, scheduling, budget management, etc
Working knowledge of relevant WHS standards
Understanding of traffic and pedestrian management in public spaces
