Chauvet Maverick MK3 for Arts Centre

When the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre team saw the New CHAUVET Professional Maverick MK3 Profile in action, they knew that was the powerful fixture they needed installed to take their world class performances to the next level.

The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre was opened in 1990 with a community celebration and a Gala Concert performance by Dame Joan Sutherland accompanied by Richard Bonynge. The Centre initially housed the Penrith Conservatorium of Music, the Richard Bonynge Concert Hall and the Allan Mullins Studio but in 2005 it was upgraded to include the Q Theatre, extended Conservatorium facilities and a large atrium foyer.

Today The Joan presents the best in music, theatre and dance; with world class performances from artists acclaimed nationally and internationally. With the venue hosting -such high-quality performances, stage lighting has become more important than ever, and recently the Centre came to Showtools International looking to upgrade their moving head range. After seeing the new CHAUVET Professional Maverick MK3 Profile in action, they were blown away with its capabilities and decided to acquire 5 to install from Showtools International.

“We have been searching for a large LED fixture to upgrade some of the older units we own, and this is it. This will replace several fixtures in our inventory, so we can continue to grow and deliver a better experience to our audience,” explained Benjamin Turner, Lighting Designer for The Joan.

An intensely bright fixture (over 51,000 source lumens), the Maverick MK3 Profile has the punch to meet the needs of large venues. It also can excel in a wide variety of applications thanks to its impressive range of performance features, which include a 4-blade, fully wiping shutter system that rotates up to 60° in each direction (120° total).

Benjamin continued, “Its precision LED optics feature CMY + CTO colour mixing and its zoom is outstanding, with a fast 9:1 zoom ratio that maintains a flat field of focus even when fully wide. A key feature that was very appealing was the adjustable CRI which is from 73 to 93 and is excellent for the venue because we can use it as a key light for broadcasted events.”

“The choices with the Maverick MK3 Profile are fantastic as the fixture offers great static, rotating, animation effects from its 2 gobo wheels (1 rotating, 1 static), animation wheel, 2 independent and overlapping prisms and 2 frost options: superlight and medium,” said Benjamin.

In addition to the new Maverick MK3 Profile, the venue also acquired 5 Maverick MK2 Washes. Maverick MK2 Wash comes with flawlessly even output, custom designed optics, full pixel mapping, virtual gobo wheel with background colours and 7° – 49° zoom range.

“The Maverick MK2 Washes will complement our MK3 Profiles really well,” Benjamin stated. “The fixtures will allow us to wash the entire stages in even fields of light to create a colourful and vibrant environment for all performances. The virtual gobo wheel of the Maverick MK2 Wash will also be invaluable by introducing a continuous flow of new and engaging looks.”

With the addition of the Maverick MK3 Profile and MK2 Washes, The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre is now equipped to provide great colour, looks and atmosphere for all its world class performances held at the venue. “We are excited in what this new fixture can do for us,” concluded Benjamin.
