Casual Technical Services

City of Newcastle (CN) has an opportunity for a Casual Technical Services person to work in our beautiful Civic Theatre on a casual basis.  This position work on a range of different technical areas within the theatre such as lighting, audio, rigging, patching documentation and implementing the actions around the operations of the performance.

To be successful in this job you will:

Essential – For Technical Services Level 2

  • Work individually or under supervision in a team environment
  • Understand theatrical lighting and audio systems, including rigging, patching, documentation, implementation and operation.
  • Be responsible for the quality of your work, and exercise discretion
  • Understand and use tools and equipment, scenery and handle props.
  • Have basic keyboard skills for AV programs such as; PowerPoint and Qlab.
  • Understand theatre terminology and apply work practices.

Essential – For Technical Services Level 3

  • Understand theatre terminology and etiquette and apply technical and operation skills for a live performance venue.
  • Solve straightforward problems, including interpreting and understanding of theatrical plans and technical specifications.
  • Be experienced in using advanced theatrical lighting and audio systems, including rigging, patching, documentation, implementation and operation.
  • Organise pre-allocated materials and equipment efficiently and effectively.
  • Work under general supervision and autonomously.
  • Exercise discretion and be responsible for the quality of your work
  • Intermediate keyboard skills using AV programs (PowerPoint and Qlab).

 Essential – For Technical Services Level 4

  • Understand theatre terminology and etiquette and apply technical and operation skills of a live performance venue.
  • Be experienced in communication and negotiations and be ready to solve straightforward problems, including interpreting and understanding theatrical plans and technical specifications.
  • Organise allocated materials and equipment efficiently and effectively.
  • Be responsible for the quality of work undertaken
  • Understand rigging, use tools and equipment, including working safely at heights, and operate all lifting equipment.
  • Exercise discretion and have advanced keyboard skills on AV programs such as; PowerPoint, Qlab and photo management.
  • Operate, maintain, set up and/or control lighting equipment and automated systems including power and data distribution, communication management and console / fixture programming; audio Visual equipment and knowledge of projection and display equipment, protocol, format and data management; basic sound systems including radio microphones and playback including digital audio consoles.

Essential – For Technical Services Level 5

  • Have a high-level understanding of theatre terminology and etiquette as well as apply technical and operation skills of a live performance venue.
  • Be experienced in event production and co-ordination with proven capacity to communicate effectively with both front and back of house personnel.
  • Be an experienced communicator and negotiator, and be able to solve complex problems, including interpreting and understanding theatrical plans and technical specifications.
  • Effectively handle peak periods with a variety of tasks, and readily adapt to changes in work procedures and technologies.
  • Organise, source and allocate materials and equipment effectively and efficiently, using problem solving skills to deliver a satisfactory end result.
  • Understand and perform rigging, use tools and equipment at heights
  • Exercise discretion and have advanced keyboard skills for AV programs (PowerPoint, Qlab) and photo management programs, as well as network infrastructure in an event or theatrical context.
  • Operate, maintain, set up or control lighting equipment and automated lighting systems including power and data distribution, communication management and console / fixture programming; AV, projection and display equipment, protocol, format and data management; advanced audio systems including radio microphones and playback, and experience in digital audio consoles; and advanced lighting systems, including moving lighting, LED based lighting systems and lighting networks
  • Ensure that overall quality standards are met with consistency, timeliness, compliance with procedures, and responsive to the customer and client.
  • Be Certified in Working at Heights, Elevated Work Platform Operation and have a WorkCover licence to perform high risk work including rigging, dogging and forklift operation, and operate all lifting equipment.

Remuneration:  Casual rates:

  • $24.82 (including 20% Casual Loading) – Level 2
  • $25.72 (including 20% Casual Loading) – Level 3
  • $27.61 (including 20% Casual Loading) – Level 4
  • $28.51 (including 20% Casual Loading) – Level 5
