Backline & Audio Hire Department Manager

About us

Modern Musician is Tasmania’s largest musical instrument retailer, and the trusted source for backline, DJ and small PA hire. We work with touring acts, venues, festival organisers and promoters from tier A international acts through to emerging artists, providing specialised support to their backline and DJ needs when performing or recording on the apple isle. We also offer small PA & studio equipment hire to support the needs of local musicians and organisations, and nurture first time hirers through the process and help design easy to use solutions to set them up for success. We also partner with Tasmania’s premier production companies to provide specialised backline & DJ capability to their productions & events. The role is based from our North Hobart warehouse.

Qualifications & experience

  • Real-world industry experience as either a performer, or having worked for a production company, live music venue or hire company, to have a sound understanding of the needs of our clients.
  • Previous warehousing, manual handling and delivery experience desired but not essential.
  • Electrical testing and tagging is required, but can be picked up once on the job.
  • Proficient computing skills, experience with cloud based document management (Google Sheets, Google Drive, Dropbox etc) and exemplary communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently, problem solve, and actively seek guidance when required.
  • Unrestricted manual drivers license and willingness to operate vans and small trucks.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Liaise with touring acts, promoters, venues, tour managers & production managers on their backline & DJ requirements.
  • Nurture first time and inexperienced hirers through the process, and suggest substitutions and ideal solutions to meet their needs and capabilities.
  • Maintain our hire inventory through routine audits, cleaning and maintenance schedules. Identify and remedy equipment failures and spare parts.
  • Manage quoting, invoicing & payments.
  • Co-ordinating and de-conflicting deliveries, collections and logistical requirements.
