AV Technician

TERM: 0.6 FTE, 1 year contract (renewable)

REPORTS TO: Production Manager

SALARY RANGE: $60,000 – $65,000 pro rata + statutory superannuation

About the Role:

The AV Technician is responsible for the delivery of events in the Wheeler Centre’s main Performance Space: a flexible, busy 250-seat venue in the CBD that hosts the majority of TWC’s public talks programme. The role includes end-to-end responsibility for the technical set up, operation, live-streaming and recording a range of events – for example, panel discussions, in-conversations, and lectures produced by the Wheeler Centre, its Resident Organisations and commercial and not-for-profit external hirers. Delivering approximately 150 events annually, the AV Technician maintains the highest standards in event delivery and safety at all times.

This role will suit someone who enjoys working in a hands-on role as part of a highly-motivated and collaborative team. You will bring exemplary technical know-how to the Production team, and display a solutions-focused approach to producing high-quality events and digital recordings. The role would suit someone wanting to expand their skill set across a wide variety of performance and broadcast technologies.

This role is offered as a 0.6 FTE, with a flexible spread of hours across the year. The role requires regular evening work and occasional weekend work, is based in Melbourne, and requires mostly on-site work.

You Are:

  • An experienced technician, with significant experience delivering live events as an AV technician or theatre multi-tech;
  • A multi-tasker, with experience in digital audio systems, lighting, camera operations, livestream software, recording software, in both live and studio environments;
  • Willing to learn new things, and able to approach challenges and opportunities with a positive, can-do attitude;
  • A problem-solver, who is able to think on your feet and respond constructively and positively if things aren’t working;
  • Calm, friendly and good under pressure, particularly when working with colleagues, guests and stakeholders of all levels and from all backgrounds;
  • A good communicator, with high-level listening, negotiating and verbal communication skills;
  • Flexible with time, and able to respond to a changing schedule;
  • An agile, flexible worker who can respond to changing demands and priorities;
  • An organised, systematic planner and multi-tasker who can juggle multiple priorities and projects and excels at time management, including arriving on time for events and meetings;
  • A team player, who can contribute to efficient and effective workflows within and between teams.
  • Experienced in vMix, Digico, Luminaire, Black Magic Cameras, and Reaper (desirable), or willingness to learn;
  • Experienced in video editing with Adobe Premiere or Da Vinci Resolve (desirable), or willingness to learn;
  • Experienced in visual design in Photoshop and After Effects (desirable), or willingness to learn.

You Have:

  • A good working knowledge of OH&S requirements and risk management for public events;
  • An unrestricted driver’s license;
  • An interest in books, writing and ideas, and in working with people.

Day-to-Day you will:

  • Support the Production Manager to plan and coordinate production and technical requirements for all events in the Performance Space;
  • Operate technical aspects of Performance Space events, including lighting, sound, audio, live stream and video recording;
  • Manage end-to-end workflow of the digital recording and live-streaming of live events, including audio/video setup, live switching, camera focusing, recording, data transfer and archive management;
  • Ensure all activities are delivered with an awareness of, and high-level commitment to, OH&S policies and procedures;
  • Act as Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) representative at events, in conjunction with the Events Manager or FOH supervisor;
  • Attend and contribute production input at regular all-staff and team meetings;
