Associate Technical Designer

The Associate Technical Designer is a role engaged to assist in the development, execution, installation and maintenance of projects across the Mandylights group of companies. It is a hybrid role, working between technical and creative tasks.

Reporting to the Technical Design team, the Associate Technical Designer will work with Mandylights’ technical design team to facilitate and execute technical and pre-production tasks, in addition to providing assistance, where required on-site with the installation and successful operation of project elements as required.

The role will also fulfil a more traditional “associate” role, aiding company technical and creative designers in the mechanics of lighting design, while requiring the employee to learn, adopt and ensure that the designer’s creative vision is maintained at all times to a world-class standard. As such, the role may be exposed to board operation, including programming consoles and onsite operation for live shows as well as pre-production and pitch tasks such as creating plots, paperwork, renders and pre-visualisation assets.

This role requires a passion for autonomous learning and up-skilling, finding innovative solutions and communicating with the wider teams.

Key responsibilities and duties:

  • Working as part of a team to assist in the generation of technical proposals for projects, helping to support the creative and operational functions of the business;
  • Assisting with the process of translating project technical objectives into tasks and working with the project team to ensure projects stay on time and to budget;
  • Helping to oversee the preparation and maintenance of equipment, and assist in on site installation, operation and removal of technical aspects of projects as required;
  • Assist and collaborate with designers in creating creative and technical plans, including plots and other forms of plans relevant to pitches, presentations and the production process.
  • Programme and operate lighting consoles during pre-production, rehearsals and live running periods as required;
  • Assist with the coordination of major projects via remote management and monitoring
  • Troubleshoot issues with lighting networks and systems as required;
  • Assist with creating, importing and programming pre visualisation files in Depence, L8 and other platforms.
  • Assist with documentation of current, historic and future projects and products and work with the Technical Design team on development of new technologies and processes.
  • Working closely with the Mandylights designers to ensure maintenance and consistency of design quality, practice and style

Essential skills required

  • Understanding of how events and production environments typically work
  • Understanding of industry-standard pre-visualisation systems and drawing programs
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
  • High standard of presentation.
  • Strong organisation skills, and ability to manage last-minute changes and constantly evolving client demands etc.
  • Ability to work autonomously, while maintaining excellent and regular reporting commitments to management.
  • Desire for the development and maintenance of long term, sustainable relationships with staff, contractors, suppliers and clients.
  • Ability to learn autonomously
