The Associate Technical Designer is a role engaged to assist in the development, execution, installation and maintenance of projects across the Mandylights group of companies. It is a hybrid role, working between technical and creative tasks and is based in our office in Melbourne, Australia but with potential travel opportunities to our Sydney and UK offices as required as well as various other domestic and international travel where projects require.
Reporting to the Technical Design team and Managing Director, the Associate Technical Designer will work with Mandylights’ technical design team to facilitate and execute technical and pre-production tasks, in addition to providing assistance, where required on-site with the installation and successful operation of project elements as required. The role shall also fulfil a more traditional “associate” role, aiding company technical and creative designers in the mechanics of theatrical lighting design, while requiring the employee to learn, adopt and ensure that the designer’s creative vision is maintained at all times to a world-class standard. As such, the role will be exposed to board operation, including programming consoles and onsite operation for live shows.
General responsibilities of this role include, and we are happy to provide training to the right candidate:
• Working as part of a team to assist in the generation of technical proposals for projects, helping to support the creative and operational functions of the business;
• Assisting with the process of translating project technical objectives into tasks and working with the project team to ensure projects stay on time and to budget;
• Helping to oversee the preparation and maintenance of equipment, and assist in on site installation, operation and removal of technical aspects of projects as required;
• Assist and collaborate with designers in creating creative and technical plans, including plots and other forms of plans relevant to pitches, presentations and the production process.
• Programme and operate lighting consoles during pre-production, rehearsals and live running periods as required;
• Assist with the coordination of major projects via remote management and monitoring
• Troubleshoot issues with lighting networks and systems as required;
• Assist with creating, importing and programming pre visualisation files in Depence, L8 and other platforms.
• Working closely with the Mandylights designers to ensure maintenance and consistency of design quality, practice and style.
