An Interesting Production Space

The Commonwealth Games Festival saw a number of performance stages throughout the Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise area and the one that stood out by far as unique in so many ways was at, or more like on, the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Surf Parade in Broadbeach.

The “Roundabout Stage” was literally constructed over the roundabout at that intersection and provided a 360 degree performance space that had standing space as well as views from the restaurants and hotels that surrounded the space. Stage Set built the stage and Creative Productions hung four pre-rig trusses around the perimeter and a small circle truss in the centre of the stage.

The lighting component consisted of GLP X4L Washes and GT-1 Spots as well as TLC Tour Pro Storms, Titan Washes and Robe BMFL’s. Control was a grandMA 2 Full Size and used LSC Lighting Powerpoint and Gen IV Distributions in a dimmer room built under the stage. Beyond all of this, a custom floor package of 24 Ayrton MagicBlades on rolling truss uprights was supplied for one of the acts.

Creative Productions’ Michael Hughes was the resident lighting designer and operator for the stage and occasionally some acts would supply their own LD.

The installation was protected well from the weather, on a stage that provided very little in the way of shelter from the elements. The rig worked flawlessly from install to load out, which is a testament to not only the equipment but the crew that worked through the festival.
