ALIA Women: Kath Millar

Who are you?
I’m Kath Millar, and a tomboy out of Dandenong, Victoria

Describe the work you do

I’m a rigger who works for Capricorn Rigging, setting up shows for bands that come to Melbourne.

What led you to your current work?

A friend got me a job at CLS, and it got me interested in all aspects of setting up shows. Learned lighting at CLS, then learned audio from McLean Audio then onto the rigging side. Built large outdoor steel stages. Also becoming crew chief with Gig Power.
I even worked for EPS Australia as Operations manager, learning ground cover for events.
So I have pretty much covered it all

What are you working on now or about to start work on?
Twice. I’ve just finished Teddy Swims, Jelly Roll and Ricky Martin.

What are the good things about your job?

Working with a great crew that starts as friends and turns into family.
The interesting and diverse people you meet from all over the world. The enjoyment of seeing people seeing their favourite bands or artists.

What are the worst things about your job?

I guess sometimes the hours.
But when everything is done and dusted, it’s all worth it.

What, so far, has been your career highlight?

This will sound weird, but working for Kiss when Gene Simmons does God of Thunder. At the front of the stage, I got to hold a par can on him while he does his blood spit before flying into the roof. I got covered!
Running the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne with the biggest crew numbers to date on one event.
Working for bands and artists that you loved when you were young.

What is the most blatant example of sexism you have encountered at work?

You’re a girl, what would you know? You’re girl, you can’t lift that. Proved them so wrong

What advice would you give any woman considering a career in the entertainment industry?

Give it a go. You never know if you don’t try. However, remember one thing: this job is 24/7. We don’t work Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Learn as much as you can. Ask questions and don’t be afraid to ask. No matter what, no matter how much you think you know, you never stop learning.

What is your career goal?

To continue doing what I love til I can’t no more. Many years in me still.
