ALIA Tour to Cirque du Soleil’s Ovo, Melbourne

The stage in Cirque du Soleil’s touring show, OVO, is covered with creepy, crawly things: an entire colony of insects, to be exact. Warm, colourful lighting by Éric Champoux helps create a wonderful world of kinetic, acrobatic ‘insects’ living under the big top in OVO, Cirque du Soleil’s most recent show to tour Australia.

OVO marks the first time Lighting Designer Éric Champoux has worked on a Cirque du Soleil show. “My first inspiration was the big top itself,” he says. “I wanted to make use of the apparatus and equipment in the centre, the four masts and the set elements located way in the background. I started by designing on paper from the very beginning of the project, and that’s how I continued to work, looking at the stage as a whole, and observing how dance and the harmony of colours play off each other.”

The lighting rig for Ovo comprises of 2 x GrandMA 1 Light Consoles,  3 x Netgear FS108 Network Switch, 3 x Pathway DMX Manager Plus 4, 3 x Pathway DMX Repeater – 6 port fully isolated opto-splitter, 2 x ETC Sensor 48 Touring Racks – CEM+ (96 DC20 or CC20 Modules), 4 x Portable Single DMX Dimmers FD1-6K (Lex6000W), 17 x Martin MAC700 Spot Fixtures, 22 x Martin TW1 Wash Fixtures, 187 x Color Kinetics Icolr MR G2 MR LED Fixtures, 28 x Ldde SpectraWow Par LED Fixtures, 20 x Source Four Profile 19? Lens, 42 x Source Four Profile 26? Lens, 3 x Source Four Profile 36? Lens, 6 x Source Four Profile 50? Lens, 106 x James Thomas Par 64’s, 24 x Pro Stage Par 20’s, 4 x Altman Fresnel 5k 5000L-HM, 30 x Chroma Q M Plus Colour Changers, 2 x Chroma Q M5 Colour Changers
