LIVE SOUND COURSES

Sydney-based audio engineer (and owner of ENTECH) Julius Grafton returns to live sound training with a series of hands-on ‘basics’ courses. Grafton pioneered his courses over a decade operating his own training college, which produced a sizeable cohort, many of whom work professionally today. That college closed after struggling with the accredited training framework which increasingly required ’core units’ that have nothing to do with sound being taught, and which – still today – flips and changes and requires heavy regulatory compliance.

“My new courses are just about live sound,” he told ALIA. “I’m really comfortable with a small group who have varying levels of knowledge – from a teenager who knows nothing, through to someone already working on stage who needs to take the next steps. The current skills shortage makes this the right time to come back, and my new live sound and lighting company, which I call ‘Julius GRAFTONS Sound and Lighting’, is a cheeky comeback since I once owned a business with a similar name! Plus you can’t do training unless you have equipment – and I have plenty now!”

There are six short courses on offer, starting Saturday, Feb 4 at Auburn (Sydney) with # 1: Intro to live sound, equipment and concepts. It runs from 10am for 4 hours, and costs $130. Thereafter come these:

(2) Set up a simple system and get it running.

(3) Using a mixing console, signal flow.

(4) Stage monitor basics, finding and fighting feedback.

(5) Speaker system essentials, active/passive/powered.

(6) Set up a complete system and mic up a band.

“We always start with an analogue mixing console well before touching a digital system,” he continued. “I’ve had several in-house venue enquiries to learn on the equipment they have. My courses at Auburn are with my equipment and I have a really good cross-section.”

Grafton may offer courses in Adelaide during February and March, where he is an audio engineer at Fringe for six weeks, and again in Melbourne between April and May.
